| Hello all, Today we have increased the maximum matrix size for the Online Matrix Calculator, to 30 rows by 30 columns.

Hi, Trifon.
I am curious: do many people need a solver for 30x30 matrices?
I am guessing that most of your users are students; however, most students would use 3x3 matrices for most of their work. Upper-level undergraduate students, and graduate level students are pushed into using MATLAB (or a similar commercial product) or writing their own software.
What motivated you to increase the maximum matrix size? (And have you found the increase to actually be used by many users?)
Sincerely,
Robert

| Hello Robert, I am afraid I cannot reply to your answer since we to not monitor what people do with our online matrix calculator. In the past we had a utility which reported the errors and we were able to see that most of the errors resulted from attempts to use larger matrices. We had set the 12x12 limit because the calculator was running on a shared hosting service and we did not want it to slow down the server. Since we moved the site to a dedicated server, we would be able to increase the matrix size limit. I agree that on demanding applications a specialized tool is more appropriate. We are the publishers of such software (.NET Matrix Library) which is used by programmers. The online calculator has its place because it is free, easy to use and does not require any software to be pre-installed and/or licensed on the client machine.

Since increasing the maximum matrix size, has that error stopped occurring?
Did you do any incremental testing to see if the error would stop happening if the maximum matrix size was increased to 20x20, 25x25, etc. before increasing it all the way up to 30x30?

| After increasing the matrix size to 30x30 we stopped monitoring errors. We placed a link to this forum so that users can report bugs here. .NET Matrix Library which is the core component under the online calculator is used by many appications and runs on thousands of machines locally. It is more likely that a potential bug will be reported by our customers before it is discovered by the users of the online calculator. .NET Matrix Library is used by applications which perform operations on huge matrices (e.g. 10,000 rows by 3,000 columns).

| I was looking for a free online matrix calculator to do a Colley Matrix calculation of NFL teams. Since there are 32 NFL teams (more than 30) I just want to confirm that the 30 x 30 maximum matrix size is a hard limit.

| Hello, We have updated the matrix calculator to a new version and we increased the maximum matrix size to 32 x 32. The online matrix calculator is very busy and we have set this limit in order to avoid the overload of our web server which is used for other tasks too.
